Is it safe to breastfeed while taking CBD

Here is what we know and the latest recommendations:

-CBD provides an array of medical benefits. There are some concerns over its suitability for women who are breastfeeding.

-Many moms suffer from postpartum depression, or general depression or anxiety and have chosen a natural route, CBD, for treatment. (It is not FDA approved for this)

-The biggest issue regarding the use of CBD while breastfeeding is the lack of scientific research conducted on nursing mothers. The studies done regarding THC have shown that it can be detrimental to the infant, therefore there is a strict recommendation against the use of marijuana while breastfeeding.

-We know that endocannabinoids (those made by our body) can be found in human breastmilk and it is believed by some that those are important for human development.

-We also know there is little risk to adults or children when using CBD.

Found on LactMed:

"Cannabidiol has not been studied in nursing women taking the pharmaceutical product, but it has been detected in the breastmilk of some mothers who used cannabis products.[1][2] Because no published information is available with cannabidiol ... during breastfeeding, an alternate drug may be preferred, especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant." Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed) [Internet]. Bethesda (MD): National Library of Medicine (US); 2006-.

The verdict:

There simply is not enough research on CBD oil and breastfeeding to make a truly educated decision. The few studies that have been done have been inconclusive in determining its potential effects or neurobehavioral outcome in exposed infants.

While we feel that there is no issue with adults taking cbd from hemp, there is just not enough research to support its use during breastfeeding when an infants brain is developing at such a rapid rate.

W would recommend against the use of CBD during breastfeeding until further research is done.

will continue to monitor research and update this blog and recommendations accordingly.
